What Causes CST?

In simple terms, CST arises when during tooth extraction, some of the germs in your tooth enter the bloodstream and infect cavernous sinus. Cavernous sinus is part of the many veins that connect the face to the brain. Therefore, when blood from around the tooth gets tainted there is the possibility that the infected blood will find its way to the mind leading to CST.

Symptoms of CST resulting from Tooth Extraction

– Swelling in the side of the face where the tooth was extracted
– Fever
Dilated pupils
– Pain

Studies indicate that CST resulting from tooth extraction is very rare. Initially, the condition had a mortality rate of 100%. Which means you were sure of dying once you were diagnosed with CST. However, current interventions, that recommend intensive administration of antibiotics have reduced the mortality rate to 30%.

There is no way of knowing whether you will belong to the 30% that will end up losing their lives as a result of CST. Therefore, do not take dental hygiene for granted. Furthermore, when you visit a dentist ensure that they are accredited.
