Surgical Repair for Joints

surgical procedure to repair a joint

There is a multitude of reasons why joints would require surgical repair. One might have joints that have been worn out or damaged because of competitive sports, or maybe another person can be suffering from arthritis. Depending on the damage on the joints, a safe surgical procedure for joint replacement is available to ease the pain and discomfort patients feel because of the impaired joints.

What is joint replacement surgery?

Joint replacement surgery can be defined as the surgical procedure to repair a joint. The need for this type of surgery can arise when the articular cartilage in the joint wears out or is damaged. There is extreme pain that coincides with damaged joints. This can also partly be caused if the synovial fluid – the fluid that lubricated the joints – is at an abnormal amount.

When a patient has a joint replacement surgery, the flawed bone and bone lining are surgically removed and replaced with new parts. These artificial implants can be made from materials such as plastic or metal and they will ensure that little to no pain will be felt by the patient after the surgery.

Are there any risks involved?

As with any medical procedure, there will always be side-effects and risks. For joint replacement surgery, here are the risks:

surgical procedure to repair a jointImplant loosening. Over time, there is a chance that the implant would wear down. If this happens, another surgery would be required to correct the loosening implant.

Joint stiffness. Since the joint is artificial, there is a slight chance that the patient would feel stiffness in the joint after the surgery.

Damage to the surrounding area of the surgery. The surgical site may also be at risk to some damage after the implant would be put in.

Even if there would be some risks, joint replacement surgery is a good option for people who want to get rid of the pain they experience because of a busted joint.
